Gelli Printing Plates

Price: $29.95

plate dimension: 8″ x 10″

Gelli plates look (and feel) like a slab of 8″ x 10″ gelatin. They have a very sensitive surface which will imprint any texture onto fabric or paper.  This surface makes a better impression than a hard surface.  Gelli plates do not retain impressions, and will last for years.

Gel printing plates can be used with fabric and paper, and imprinted with a wide variety of objects, i.e. stamps, rubbing plates, soft-tipped tools, stencils, etc.

Here’s How — it’s fun and fast!

Supplies

  • Gel printing plate
  • Fabric
  • Brayer
  • Textile paint, the thicker the better. My favorite is ProFab Opaque paint because it is very thick and provides excellent coverage on dark colors.
  • Objects to press into the print plate, i.e. rubbing plates, stamps, coins, buttons, end of marker pens (avoid sharp objects), etc.

Step One – Place daubs of paint directly on the plate

Step Two – Brayer paint over the plate

Step Three – Use leaf rubbing plate to make impressions in the paint

Step Four – Use fingers to smooth black fabric over the plate

Step Five – Lift fabric off the plate, allow to dry

Step Six – continue adding paint, and creating prints. If you want to avoid residue between printing, clean the plate with wipes, or water. If you don’t like the result, try printing over it with different colors.

When finished, clean all tools with water.

These samples were all made with combinations of red and yellow paint, and a Leaf rubbing plate.
