Hello! I’m Laura Murray, owner of Laura Murray Designs. My company was launched in 2000, immediately after the end of my 30 career as a Human Resource Manager with Honeywell. It was an easy transition, thanks to my lifelong interest in sewing and needle arts. My husband, Jim, and I Iive in Minneapolis, MN, and travel extensively to vend and teach at quilt and sewing shows across the country.
My first quiltmaking class in 1989 revealed my true passion with the discovery that I could choose my own colors and designs. Previously, all my projects originated with kits, which I completed based on the designer instructions and color choices. Soon, I was creating original work, and developing a keen interest in surface design. This led to lot of classes in how to dyeing, foil stamp, stencil, screen printing, along with a and a host of other techniques that enhance cloth. It’s a wonderful thing to discover one’s purpose. My purpose is to share my discoveries with other kindred spirits.
My artistic aspirations are similar to the StarTrek mission: “Going where no one has gone before,” and I also want to get there at warp speed. Complexity and speed are not always easy partners, and my approach is to find and use the most direct path to my desired result. Encouraged by a number of ribbons won at various juried quilting exhibits across the country, I began to author articles, write a book, teach, design my own stamp and stencil products, and develop my own techniques. It is rewarding work, and I’m grateful to all who support my passion.
This quilt features my painted, layered and fused techniques using the Exotica Stamp set, paintstiks and fusible web. The outline of each shape is done with handstitched pearl cotton. Visit the Learning Center for information about my techniques. Find my unique
